The Elephanta Caves

One of the most famous tourist attractions, the Elephanta Caves are located around 10 Km from the Gateway of India. There are numerous rock cut temples dating back to the 5th Century. The Elephanta Caves were named by the Portuguese after a status of an elephant and were dedicated to the Lord Shiva. The entire complex was created using rock removal process with corridors and chambers where people can walk. The entire caves cover an area of about 6oooo square feet. The creators of these spectacular and magnificent caves are still unknown. The most famous structure within the caves is the Trimurthi Sculpture, which features the three faces of the Lord Shiva. The perfect time to visit the Elephanta caves is during the summer and winter time. Avoid the monsoon season as boat schedule could get interrupted due to heavy rain. People have to ride the ferry from the Gateway of India ferry point. The first boat leaves the Gateway of India ferry point at 9 am. The last return of the boat from the caves is at 5:30 pm.
